what is micropigmentation

Micropigmentation is also known as permanent cosmetics and it has been called anything from microdermal pigmentation, dermagraphics, interdermal implantation to dermapigmentation. It is a form of cosmetic tattooing used to enhance facial features and to add a finishing touch to surgical procedures. This simple, non-surgical procedure is safe and effective and involves a sterile needle which inserts pigment under the skin.

Pigments used for micropigmentation are non-toxic and non-reactive cosmetic grade iron oxides that are very safe to use. They can be custom mixed to achieve desired shades and intensity. Because pigments are implanted into the dermal layer of the skin, the micropigmentation procedures can last anywhere from 2 to 5 years depending on after procedure practices, daily skin regiments and the intensity of the chosen pigments. Permanent makeup is water and smudge proof!

Micropigmentation can be performed with a manual needle or electrical instruments that range from rotary, digital to coil machines. The feeling can be uncomfortable but the use of the high grade topical anesthetics will minimize the levels of discomfort for most clients.

Permanent procedure prices can range anywhere from $150 to $1500 for a single procedure. The initial cost seems to be high, however when you look at the overall length of time your procedure will lasts, the cost for a lip procedure comes to 0.80¢ per day, and roughly 0.40¢ per day for either top and bottom eyeliner or eyebrow procedures (less money than you would spend for conventional makeup, not to mention the savings of time on your daily beauty routines). But anyone interested in having a procedure done, should not choose a technician on price alone. Be sure you talk to a technician face to face, have them answer all of your questions and most of all, request to see their portfolio, so you can better assess if that specific technician will be the right person to do your procedure.

Micropigmentation can be classified into two categories: permanent makeup and corrective pigment camouflage (CPC).

PERMANENT MAKEUP includes eyeliner, lash enhancement, eyebrow simulation, beauty marks, lip liner and full lip shading. Permanent makeup can subtly define and balance facial features and provide a viable option to clients on the "GO" and individuals with various physical impairments who have a difficulty with daily makeup application. Many women will elect to have a natural looking pigments permanently implanted into their skin for a soft, natural makeup effect. If desired, permanent makeup can be dressed up with traditional makeup to achieve a more dramatic effects (i.e., evening/glamorous look).

CORRECTIVE PIGMENT CAMOUFLAGE (CPC) is a procedure that is effective in the re-pigmentation of the skin lightened or darkened from scarring due to illness, injury, surgery and various degree burn accidents. Cancer patients, burn survivors and sufferers of conditions such as Alopecia or Vitiligo will benefit the most from this form of micropigmentation. Women who have had their breasts reconstructed after breast cancer, can use CPC to cover up scaring and to create an illusion of nipples and areolas. Burn survivors can have noticeable scaring re-pigmented with custom colour blends for a more unified skin tones. Men can have their eyebrows thickened or scars covered with a camouflaging hair strokes that will simulate natural looking hair. For many patients, CPC procedures are not considered a luxury, but a necessity that will allow them to restore their self image.
